British Gas Business reviews, prices and tariffs

British Gas Business is one of the UK's biggest suppliers of commercial gas and electricity. It provides power to companies of all sizes, from micro businesses to large and industrial businesses. At Bionic, we have three British Gas brands on our panel – British Gas Business, British Gas Plus, and BG Lite.

Who is British Gas Business?

British Gas is the UK’s biggest energy company, supplying gas and electricity to around 11 million households and more than 350,000 businesses. It’s also the UK’s oldest energy supplier, having been founded as The Gas Light and Coke Company in 1812. This was the world's first public utility company.

British Gas became a private company following the deregulation of the UK energy market in 1989. Its parent company, Centrica, is an energy service and solutions company that both produces and supplies energy for use by businesses and households.

British Gas provides a tailored service for commercial energy customers via its three main brands – British Gas Business, British Gas Plus, and BG Lite. It offers zero-carbon electricity as standard with all fixed-term contracts and also provides smart meters to businesses that need them.

What services does British Gas Business offer?

British Gas Business supplies gas and electricity to businesses of all sizes. It also offers products and solutions to meet the changing needs of business energy consumers, such as meter installations and upgrades, as well as renewable energy plans for businesses that use more than 150,000 kWh of energy a year.

If you’re moving business premises, you can switch to British Gas Business. If your new business property needs a new connection, you’ll need to arrange this with your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

Once you’ve sorted your supply, you’ll get a new MPRN for your gas meter, and new MPAN, KVA and meter phase type for your electricity supply. When you have these details, you can switch to British Gas Business. You might also be offered a smart meter.

What is British Gas Plus?

BG Plus offers fixed-price electricity deals for high consumption businesses that use half-hourly metering. This plan allows instant access to your meter consumption data to help forecast and manage your business energy bills

What is BG Lite?

BG Lite is a fixed-price gas and electricity service for small businesses. Low prices, online account management and an electricity smart meter at no extra cost are all features of this plan.

What tariffs and rates does British Gas Business offer?

British Gas Business offers a range of gas and electricity tariffs to suit the needs of businesses of all sizes across all industries.

  • Fixed Price Energy Plan – Fix your unit rates for one, two, or three years. Save 7% by paying by Direct Debit.
  • 30-day Rolling Energy Plan – A variable rate tariff that moves as market prices move. You can switch from this plan to a fixed plan at any time and switch to another supplier with 30 days’ notice. Save 7% by paying by Direct Debit.
  • Half-hourly meters – If your business has a high electricity demand, a half-hourly meter can help tailor pricing based on your energy usage and on the opening times of your business. This type of meter also sends automatic readings to your supplier for accurate billing.
  • Commercial landlords – Whether you have one commercial building or a huge portfolio, British Gas Business can provide fixed or flexible contracts for them.
  • Renewable business energy – If your business uses more than 150,000 kWh of gas or electricity, then British Gas Business can offer you a renewable business energy plan.

British Gas Business also provides a Variable Price Plan for businesses that don’t arrange a new fixed deal at the end of their current contract. If you move into a property that’s supplied by British Gas Business, but you don’t arrange a contract, you’ll be placed on its deemed rates plan. You can find out more in our business relocation guide

The rates and tariff type you’re offered when you switch to British Gas Business will depend upon your business and its current circumstances. Your contract will have a minimum period of supply, which could be up to five years, during which time you won’t be able to switch suppliers during this time.

You can compare deals once your contract enters its switching window, which can be up to six months before your contract’s end date. Customers that renew with Bionic six months before their deal finishes could save you up to 20% compared to leaving it later.
