What is...

dance studio insurance?

A dance studio is more than just a place to teach — it's your livelihood. But even the most creative spaces need protection from life's unexpected stumbles.

Dance studio insurance is a type of business insurance designed for the specific risks that come with running a space where people learn, practice, and perform. It can help cover you for accidents in the studio, claims from students, equipment damage and loss of income if you have to close due to material damage. Dance studios help contribute to UK’s performing arts and music sector which provides £11,4bn of the UK’s economy, and dance studios are a key part of it.

Whether you teach hip-hop, ballet or fitness classes, we'll help you compare quotes and get insurance that fits your needs, so you can focus on helping your students shine.

What type of dance studios are covered?

No matter the style or setup of your dance studio, it’s likely we can help. We can arrange cover for the majority of studios, including:

  • Ballet and modern dance schools
  • Street dance and hip-hop studios
  • Yoga/Pilates studios
  • Fitness spaces like Zumba or aerobics studios
  • Studios that host performances or competitions
  • Spaces hired out to self-employed dance instructors

Can’t find your studio listed? It's likely we can still help. Start a quote online and a member of our insurance team will be on hand to help. Freelance or self-employed, you’re cover options may be different, see dance teacher insurance.

What doesn’t it cover?

While dance studio insurance provides a wide range of cover, there are some exclusions, including:

  • Intentional damage – Damage caused on purpose isn’t covered.
  • Neglect – Losses due to lack of maintenance, such as failing to fix faulty equipment, may void your policy.
  • General wear and tear – Normal ageing or wear on your equipment or flooring is excluded.

Double-check your policy details or speak to our team if you have any questions about what’s covered and what isn’t.

What risks do dance studios face day to day?

Dance is a physical activity, and that comes with risk — for your students, your staff, and your business. Here are some real-world scenarios that dance studio insurance is designed for:

  • A student slips on a wet studio floor — or trips over a speaker cable during class — and makes a claim for their injury.
  • A student is injured during a lift or acrobatic sequence, and they pursue a compensation claim.
  • Your sound system or mirrors are stolen from your studio overnight, or damaged in a break-in.
  • A flood or fire forces you to close for several weeks, with no income coming in.
  • A student alleges your instruction caused a long-term injury, such as a back problem or a joint strain.
  • An employee develops a repetitive strain injury from teaching multiple classes per day and makes a claim against your business.

Any one of these without the right cover could cost you thousands of pounds out of pocket. With the right policy in place, you have financial protection if a claim is made against you.

How much does dance studio insurance cover cost?

Dance studio insurance could cost from 8p a day*

  • Extent of cover — The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package will likely be.
  • Your insurer — Depending on who is willing to insure you, the price for their policies will vary.
  • Location — The location of your business is taken into consideration when calculating the cost of your premiums. If have multiple studios, you may consider covering all of these under a single policy.
  • Whether you employ staff or teach solo — If you have teachers or assistants working for you, employers' liability is a legal requirement and will influence your premium.
  • The type of classes you run — Partner work or acrobatic style classes could be seen as higher risk by an insurer than low-impact sessions.
  • Whether you own or rent your studio — Owning your premises means you may need buildings cover too.
  • Claims history — If you've made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.

FAQs

How quickly can I get insurance?

Depending on your business needs and the policy type, you can often get cover the same day you apply. Start a quote online to get going with a quote.

Does dance studio insurance cover me for performances or shows?

Although not a legal requirement, if your dance studio hosts any dance shows, competitors or performances elsewhere it’s a good idea to consider the right level of public liability insurance. Cover for events won’t automatically be on your policy, if you’re planning on running any type of dance events, you must inform your broker so you are correctly insured.

Does the type of dance I teach affect what cover I need?

Classes with contact work - such as acrobatics ariel, partner dancing, or even contemporary — may be seen as a higher risk by insurers. If you use props, special effects, or perform outdoor this could also impact your premium. You should consider public liability insurance for dance studios, the scope and extent of cover depends on your business requirements. Always be transparent with your broker so they can find the cover for your needs.

Is insurance a legal requirement for dance studios?

If you have any workers, including employees, part-time teachers and dance assistants, employers' liability insurance is required by UK law.  Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement, but it can be considered essential cover to help if the event a student makes an injury claim.

Does dance studio insurance cover online classes?

It depends on the insurer and policy wording. If you run live-streamed or pre-recorded online dance classes, always tell your broker. Some insurers will cover this under your existing policy, while others may need to add it. It's worth checking your existing policy for this— especially if you've expanded into digital teaching platforms.

Can I get dance insurance if I've had a claim before?

Yes — having a previous claim doesn't stop you from getting cover. It may affect your premium, but you can still compare dance insurance quotes. Always tell your broker about any previous claims when you start a quote.
