With more than 50 providers currently serving businesses of all sizes right across the UK, finding the best energy supplier for your business can be a thankless task – not least because you’ll need to get in touch with each one individually to find the best rates. Twice, if you need quotes for both business gas and business electricity.
And while getting the cheapest business energy rates will probably be your number one priority, price should never be your only consideration - it’s also important to choose a provider who can meet the specific needs of your business.
But that’s not to say you should necessarily stick with your current supplier, even if you’re happy with their service, as many suppliers will save their best rates to entice new customers. This means that loyal customers can get short-changed.
And if you let your current energy deal end without agreeing a new one, you’ll be stung by even more expensive out of contract rates.
That’s where Bionic’s tech-enabled experts can help.
Whether you’re looking to switch to a new supplier or arrange a more competitive contract with your existing one, we can use our smart technology and human expertise to negotiate the best deal for your business.
At Bionic, we've been helping businesses of all sizes find the best business energy deals for well over a decade now. We work closely with our panel of trusted energy suppliers to find the best deals for your business and have a range of providers you can choose from.
Big six energy suppliers
The big six business energy suppliers are the largest and most well-established players in the market, and include brands like Centrica (the parent group of British Gas), SSE and E.On.
Although there is a growing number of challenger brands that are closing the gap, this big six still has the biggest market share.
One reason for this is that these big brands are often seen as the safer bet when it comes to switching business energy suppliers. But, despite their lofty reputations, big isn’t always best when it comes to your energy supply.
Speak to our tech-enabled experts to find the best supplier for your business.
Independent business energy suppliers
The big six may still dominate the business energy market, but there are plenty of challenger brands offering viable alternatives for businesses of all sizes, across all industries.
If you’re skeptical about switching to smaller, independent energy supplier, our tech-enabled experts can talk you through your options to help put your mind at rest and find the most suitable supplier for your business. Remember, these challenger brands sometimes offer cheaper rates and better customer service than the bigger players.
Green energy suppliers
If you want to do your bit for the environment, switching to a green business energy supplier is a good place to start. Green suppliers offer energy from renewable sources, including wind, solar, and hydro, while also offsetting any energy provided from non-renewable sources through investment in environmental projects.
Many green energy suppliers will offer 100% renewable electricity, and a growing number are now offering ‘green gas’, including biogas from anaerobic digestion and landfill gas. Speak to our tech-enabled team to find out more.
When you switch business energy suppliers with Bionic, you can rest assured that we’re working hard behind the scenes to make sure the switch goes through smoothly. Once you’ve run a business energy comparison and chosen the deal that’s best for your business, we’ll let both your current and new energy suppliers know that you’ve decided to switch.
Your new business energy provider will then get in touch with details of when the changeover will take place, along with agreed payment methods and dates, before finalising the switch. But remember, there’s no cooling-off period when switching business energy, so it’s important to properly check all the details are correct before you sign up to a new deal.
You then need to give your old supplier a business energy meter reading on the day of the switch, so they can send you an accurate final bill, and that’s all there is to it. There’s no need for any digging or drilling at your business premises - the energy is still the same, and the gas and electricity is still supplied through the existing pipes and cables, it’s just the supplier that changes.
We take care of the hard work so you can do what you do best - running your business.

In many ways, business energy and domestic energy are essentially the same - both are generated and transported in the same way, sometimes by the same suppliers - but the way business energy deals are packaged and sold to customers is very different to domestic energy. Here are some of the main differences between the two:
If your business isn’t on the right type of business energy deal, you’re overpaying for gas and electricity. It’s that simple.
If you’ve never compared business energy deals and switched before, your supplier will have placed you on its more expensive ‘out of contract rates’, which can be twice as much as contracted rates.
When you switch with Bionic, we compare the following type of energy tariffs to make sure your business is on the best possible deal:

To help you understand more about switching business energy, here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
When switching to a new business energy deal, there are four main types of tariff to choose from:
Each is designed to meet the different needs of business energy users. To find out more, go to our guide on business energy tariffs.
The average amount of energy a business uses will depend upon the size of the business, along with how and why it uses energy.
But to give you a rough idea of how much energy your business should be using, here are the average energy usage figures for SMEs and large businesses:
To find out more, check out our guide to average business energy consumption.
The amount you pay for your energy will depend upon the type of deal your business is on, how and when you use gas and electricity, as well as the energy efficiency of your workplace. The size and location of your business will also play a part.
But, to give you a rough idea of how much you should be paying, check out the following estimates:
Yes. If your business uses more than 55,000 kWh of electricity or 200,000 kWh of gas each year, or it has a half hourly meter, energy suppliers will fall under large business classification.
At Bionic, we have a team dedicated to large business energy users and offer a bespoke procurement and bill validation service. To find out more, visit our guide to large business and industrial energy.
MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration number, and is used by suppliers to identify the electricity supply at your property. Also known as the ‘Suppy Number’ or ‘S Number’, this is a 21-digit number that begins with an ‘S’ and should be displayed on your electricity bill, but not on the meter itself.
MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number, and is used by suppliers to identify the gas supply at your property. Also known as an ‘M Number’, your MRPN will be between six and ten digits, which you can find on your business gas bill or on your meter.
For everything you need to know about meter numbers, check out Bionic’s guide to MPAN and MPRN..
If you run an energy-intensive business that requires more than one meter for gas and electricity, or you operate across a number of different sites, you might have multiple energy contracts, with multiple contract end dates from multiple suppliers.
If this is the case, a multi-site energy contract could save you time and money, as it will cover the billing for more than one meter, whether at a single business premises or in multiple locations. To find out more, check out our guide to multi-site energy.
If you work from home, even as a sole trader, you may be eligible for a business energy deal. While you don’t necessarily need to take out a business contract, doing so means you can take advantage of cheaper business rates by running a commercial gas and business electricity comparison.
To qualify for a commercial business contract, you’ll need to prove that you work from home and that more than half of the energy you use there is for business purposes. This might sound like a lot, but just using heating and lighting while going about your day-to-day business matters is often enough to take you over this threshold. But you will have to deduct any power used by appliances that would be on regardless of your business, such as fridges and freezers.
When you compare business energy prices and switch with any broker, comparison site or third-party intermediary (TPI), you’ll need to sign a Letter of Authority (LoA).
As this is a recognised legal document, it follows a standard format and states that while a third party can gather information, negotiate and submit notice of termination on your behalf, they do not have the right to agree a contract without your consent.
When you switch with Bionic, signing this letter confirms that you’ve given us permission to handle the switch with both your old and new suppliers. But we can’t agree to a contract on your behalf until you’ve signed the LOA. This means you stay in complete control of the switch.
If you’re moving into a new business premises, your energy contract will either be transferred to the new property, or it will be cancelled. If it’s cancelled, you’ll be on an expensive ‘deemed rates’ contract with that property’s existing supplier, and you should set up a new deal as soon as possible.
To find more, check out our guide to your business energy when relocating.
Business energy prices are always changing. The only way to make sure you’re on the best deal is to compare prices and switch. And remember, signing up to a new deal as soon as your switching window opens can help you lock in lower rates and beat any energy price rises.
When you switch with Bionic, we use smart data to find a lot of the information we need to help you switch to a better deal. This means we only need your postcode to start a business energy comparison.
We’ll take care of the switch for you, and even look after your renewals to make sure you never overpay for energy again.
No. The switching process is usually straightforward, and your business will face no disruption when you change supplier. And you won't need to worry about your new provider installing anything at your business premises, as they’ll use the same pipes and cables as your old supplier.
Deemed contracts are a type of energy deal suppliers use for businesses that have reached the end of an energy contract without switching suppliers or signing up to a new one with their current supplier.
The rates on deemed contracts are usually among the highest charged by suppliers, and prices are considered the least competitive in the energy market. Avoid overpaying for energy by switching to a new deal before your current contract expires.
