What is...

tanning salon insurance?

Own a local tanning or sunbed shop? When you’re busy dealing with clients coming and going, it’s easy to forget about business admin, like insurance.

But using tanning products and machinery comes with risks, and like any business, you can’t eliminate them completely. If things were to go wrong, you could end up paying thousands of pounds out of your own pocket in damages and compensation.

Tanning salon insurance provides financial protection if a client were to claim against you or if you need to make a claim yourself. It provides peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important - tanning your clients!

What types of tanning shops need cover?

We can help cover the following types of tanning services:

  • Spray tan salons
  • Spray tan booths

Find out why your business needs insurance from Les, our Business Comparison Expert.

Why do tanning salons need insurance?

When clients are coming to you to top up their tans, you’re likely to run into some risks, and the following could happen:

  • Faulty equipment causes a client to get sunburnt
  • A client or member of the public slips and falls in your salon
  • Someone steals your valuable tanning equipment
  • A fire or flood causes you to temporarily stop trading

It’s essential to think about sufficient insurance to protect your business, your employees and keep your customers happy!

What doesn’t it cover?

The insurer you choose will have its own list of limits and exclusions per policy, but generally, you might not find the following in your policy:

  • Work you carry out abroad - We cannot provide cover for mobile tanning services outside of the UK.
  • Unqualified work - Most insurance policies will specify that you and any employees must be trained to carry out treatments on clients otherwise, your policy is unlikely to be valid.
  • General wear and tear - Insurance policies don’t include cover for general wear and tear to the building and/or equipment.

If you offer “invasive “ treatments such as injectables as part of your services, this poses an additional risk and you will need specialist insurance. As a result, you’re likely to see fewer quote options from insurers, but our insurance team should be able to help find you a specialist insurer that fits your needs.

Salon insurance can protect your employees, property and your bank account as you provide treatments, haircuts and colours, without unexpected financial setbacks.

Do you need insurance to offer spray tans?

If you offer spray tans as part of your services, then it’s a good idea to have public liability insurance in case a customer or a member of the public suffers an injury as a result of these services.

You never know when a spray tan machine or gun might malfunction and injure someone, similarly, an employee could accidentally injure someone during a spray tan application, so it’s worth considering protecting yourself financially in case they make a claim.

How much is tanning salon and sunbed insurance?

No two insurers are the same, so it’s difficult to give a solid figure for what you might be paying for an annual insurance policy.

The following will affect the price of your premiums:

  • Extent of cover - The more cover you opt for, the more expensive your package is likely to be.
  • Your insurer - The insurer you choose will also influence costs.
  • Business activities - The type of services your tanning or sunbed shop offers will play a big part in determining the scope of your cover, influencing costs.
  • Location  – Where you work is taken into consideration when calculating the price of your premiums.
  • Claims history - Whether or not you’ve had claims made against you or you have made previous claims may affect your future premiums.

What if you have apprentices training?

As a sunbed shop owner, you might have trainees or apprentices working for you, so you must tell your insurer/broker so the right cover can be arranged, as they’ll need to be included on your policies.

Keep in mind your policy will likely only be valid if you and your trainees stick to the following:

  • They only offer treatments or therapies they can do and have been professionally trained for
  • They must be under regular supervision by someone who is qualified
  • You must tell clients that the trainee or apprentice carrying out their treatments are not fully qualified.

Some insurers may also have other limits and exclusions when it comes to trainees. Always check your policy wording for exact details.
