What is...

cyber insurance?

Cyber insurance, also known as cybersecurity insurance is a type of business cover that can help protect your business from the financial impact of cyber attacks, data breaches and IT system failures. It can help cover losses related to damages to or from networks and IT systems, from investigating to what happened to informing customers and getting your systems back up and running.

If your business uses connected devices, such as laptops, payment terminals or smartphones, or stores customer data online, you could be a potential target. The government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026, showed that 43% of UK businesses had a cyber security breach or attack in the past 12 months, that’s around 612,000 businesses.

Rather than facing these costs alone, the right cyber insurance could help cover expenses like data recovery, legal fees and the loss of income until your systems are restored.

Why should I consider cyber insurance?

It's easy to assume hackers only target big companies, but small businesses are often also a target. You might hold valuable customer data but not have the security budget of a larger company, making you an attractive target for cybercriminals.

You should consider cyber insurance if:

  • You store customer or employee data digitally
  • You take card payments online or in person
  • You use cloud-based software or run a company website
  • You rely on IT systems to run day to day operations

Shops, offices and other businesses that work closely with data should consider it. Whether you run one site or several, if your business depends on technology, you should consider protection by adding on cyber insurance to your policy.

What doesn't cyber insurance cover?

As a general rule, most insurers won't provide cover for:

  • Poor security processes — most insurers expect a baseline level of security in place, like regular software updates and basic protocols
  • Breaches or attacks that happened before your policy started
  • Cyber attacks caused by simple human error, like an employee sharing information by mistake
  • Insider attacks, where an employee sabotages your systems or steals data

Remember, policies vary per insurer and limits and exclusions apply. It's always best to check with your insurer exactly what they do and don't provide cover for.

Is cyber insurance a legal requirement?

Cyber insurance isn't a legal requirement in the UK. But if you handle personal data, you must comply with data protection law under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The right level of cyber insurance can help cover the cost if things go wrong, including legal fees and, in some cases, regulatory fines. At Bionic, we only offer cyber insurance as a standalone policy.

How much does cyber insurance cost?

Cyber insurance is normally added onto your existing policy. This additional cyber insurance cost will depend on several factors, including:

  • Size — larger businesses with more data or systems may face higher premiums
  • The data you hold — the more sensitive customer or financial data you store, the higher the risk may be
  • Extent of cover — the more cover you need, the more your package is likely to cost
  • Your industry — some sectors may be seen as higher risk than others
  • Security measures — If you have strong security processes in place, insurers may view this positively and take it into account when calculating your cyber insurance costs.
  • Claims history — if you've made a previous claim, it may affect your future premiums

Small businesses are increasingly taking cyber cover seriously, the same government Cyber research found 47% of UK businesses now hold some form of cyber insurance in 2026.

How does cyber cover work with cyber security?

Cyber insurance and cyber security can work side by side for small businesses. You may already have some sort of cyber security — your firewalls, staff training and password protection to help stop attacks from happening. Cyber insurance can help you recover if an attack gets through despite your best defences. Having both in place can give your business more layers of protection.
