Contractor Insurance FAQs

To help you understand more about contractor insurance, here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

I’m a subcontractor, do I need contractor insurance?

Although not a legal requirement, as a sub-contractor it’s essential you take out public liability insurance, even if you’re working for someone else. You could still be liable if something were to happen as a result of your work.

Are sole traders and contractors required to have insurance by law?

It’s not a legal requirement to have business insurance if you work alone, but you should consider it in case someone makes a claim against you or you need to make a claim.

Without the right insurance in place, you could be left to pay the price.

What insurance do you need if you have employees?

If you work alone, then employers' liability insurance is not needed. But, if you bring anyone else on the job, including staff or even apprentices, then you’ll need to take out employers’ liability insurance. If you don’t, you’ll be breaking the law.
