What is...

business insurance for cleaners?

Whether you run a cleaning business or are a self-employed cleaner, having sufficient cover when working in client’s homes and businesses is crucial. Even simple activities like mopping, scrubbing, and polishing with chemical products can cause accidental damage. That’s why it’s best to have your back covered should the worst ever happen.

According to the British Cleaning Council (BCC), The UK cleaning industry directly employs over 1 million people. With so much work going on in client properties every day, proper protection is essential.

Business cleaning insurance is designed to help protect cleaners and cleaning firms against the financial impact of accidents, property damage, injury claims, and even equipment damage. It can be made up of several types of cover depending on your business size and the work you do.

Why do cleaners need insurance?

Cleaning comes with various risks, so it's important you have the right cover in place. For example:

  • Your expensive cleaning tools and equipment could be stolen without tools cover
  • You could accidentally damage a client's property or contents during a job
  • You could injure yourself, your employees or a member of the public could get injured
  • Some commercial clients – such as offices, schools and retailers – may ask for proof of public liability insurance before they'll award you a contract. Having cover can also show potential clients that you're a professional, trustworthy business.
  • You may have to pay legal fees and compensation out of your own pocket without proper cover in place

According to HSE statistics, slips, trips and falls account for 31% of all non-fatal workplace injuries. As a cleaner, wet floors, loose cables and chemical spills are part of the job – making you and anyone around you more exposed to these kinds of accidents.

What type of cleaning businesses need insurance?

What isn’t covered by cleaning insurance?

Even if you have sufficient coverage, not all events may not be covered, and in some instances, you are unlikely to make a successful claim:

  • Wear and tear - Your policy won't include cover for tools or equipment damaged by wear and tear. This kind of damage wouldn't be covered by personal tool insurance in the UK either. If your tools are still within their warranty period, this may help if they're damaged in this way.
  • Pre-existing damage – If your equipment was already broken or damaged before the incident, a claim is unlikely to be successful.
  • Deliberate acts and irresponsible behaviour – Such as drinking on the job, are likely to go against you when submitting a claim.
  • Undisclosed activities – If you take on other cleaning work you haven't told your insurer about (for example, adding high-rise window cleaning when you only declared domestic work), you may find you're not covered against risk in that area.
  • Single item limit - Some insurers will have a 'single item limit', which places an upper limit on the value of any single item of equipment you can make an insurance claim for.

Remember, every insurer is different, and policies vary per provider. Find out what types of cover you need by exploring your options for cleaning insurance quotes today. Start a quote online.

Do you need insurance as a self-employed cleaner?

As a sole trader, you're personally liable for any claims made against your business. That means if a client takes you to court over damaged property or an injury – and you lose – the costs may come directly out of your own pocket. Although, not a legal requirement you may want to consider self-employed domestic cleaner insurance or commercial cleaning insurance that could help with covering legal costs if someone were to claim against you.

If you work through a cleaning agency, check whether their insurance covers your activities or whether you need your own policy. In many cases, agency cover only applies to the agency itself – not to you as the individual doing the work.

How much does cleaner insurance cost?

Prices could start from around 23p a day*.

The cost of your cleaner insurance varies on several factors unique to your business. Costs may be based on:

  • The type of cleaning work you carry out
  • The insurer you choose
  • The level of coverage you need
  • Where your business is located
  • Business size
  • Claims history

If you’re looking for a cleaning insurance quote, we’ll need you to answer a few questions to see what your options are. Start a quote online and a member of our insurance team will be on hand to talk you through any specifics.

*This price is for a trades and professions policy – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £84.20 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £7.02 a month or £0.23 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.

Are there ways I can keep my insurance costs down?

Insurance can be a big expense, but there are practical ways you could keep costs under control without sacrificing the protection you need. Here are several ways you could reduce the costs of your business insurance:

  • Invest in good security for your tools and equipment - Insurers look at risk when calculating your premium. Storing tools and cleaning equipment securely like a locked garage or a dedicated storage unit – demonstrates good risk management which could potentially help lower your premiums.
  • Compare at renewal each year – Staying with the same insurer doesn’t always guarantee the best premium. When renewing your cover consider your options to ensure you’re getting the right deal for the cover you need.
  • Use an insurance broker - At Bionic, we have access to a wide range covers available. When it’s time to renew, we can search the market again for competitive premiums to make sure you’re getting a fair deal while ensuring you’re properly protected. You can opt out of renewals at any time.
