Do you need insurance for a mobile catering business?

If you have a limited company with employees who aren’t immediate family members, it’s a legal requirement to have employers' liability insurance as a minimum, even if you work in a mobile vehicle. And if you use a vehicle for business purposes, you’re required to take out vehicle business insurance by law. 

Although not mandatory, it’s also a good idea to have public liability insurance if you’re working at events or in public spaces. This protects the public and your employees in case of injury or damages. 

What insurance do you need if you serve alcohol?

If you serve alcohol to customers, it's a good idea to have public liability insurance to protect your business.  

This will protect against drunken behaviour on your property including: 

  • Damage to property 
  • Injury and accidents 

What insurance do you need if you run a catering business from home?

Even if you’re making food at home to sell, you should still consider insurance. Similarly, if you run a food business from the kitchen in your home, it's a good idea to arrange cover. For example, if you cook pizzas at home and deliver them locally, you should consider the following policies: 

  • Public liability insurance 
  • Product liability insurance 

What about cover for hot food?

As standard, catering insurance comes with public liability insurance which protects you against claims made by customers if you spill hot food over them, causing serious injury or damage to expensive clothing. Make sure to inform your broker or insurer that you serve hot food, so you don’t risk being underinsured.
