What is...

wine bar insurance

Running a wine bar means serving a relaxed crowd, but it’s not without risks. Glasses could get smashed, a customer could slip on a wet floor, or a fire may break out in the kitchen. Wine bar insurance is designed to help protect your business against risks like these, bringing several types of cover together under one policy.

As business cover, it could include cover for your building, stock, staff and customers, so you aren't left to pay out of your own pocket if a claim is made against you. Wine bar insurance is separate from the premises licence you need to sell alcohol, and you'll need to arrange them individually.

Who needs wine bar insurance?

Whether you run a single wine bar or several sites, you should consider protecting your building, stock, staff and customers. All types of wine bars should consider cover, including:

  • Wine bars and wine tasting rooms
  • Wine cellars with tasting events
  • Wine and small plates or tapas venues – if you sell food, you might want to consider restaurant insurance.
  • Wine bars with a retail shop attached
  • Wineries and vineyards
  • Multi-site wine bar groups

Don’t see your business type, it's likely we can still help. We can provide cover for over 6,000 business types – start a quote online to see your options.

What other cover might be available for wine bars?

Glass cover – This might be included as part of a commercial buildings policy, but it's worth checking that damage to windows, mirrors and glassware isn't excluded.

Is wine bar insurance a legal requirement?

In the UK, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement if you employ anyone, including part-time or casual staff. You could be fined up to £2,500 for every day you trade without it. Other covers included in wine bar business insurance, like public liability, stock and contents, and business interruption cover, aren't required by law, but should be considered to help protect against the risks your business faces.

Selling alcohol also requires a separate premises licence, and at least one member of staff must hold a personal licence. This is not the same as business insurance and must be arranged separately with your local authority.

What isn't covered by wine bar insurance?

Knowing what your policy doesn't cover matters just as much as knowing what it does. Common exclusions could include:

  • Intentional damage – Damage caused on purpose isn't covered.
  • Neglect – Failing to maintain or secure your premises can void your policy.
  • General wear and tear – Normal ageing of your fixtures and equipment isn't included.

Insurers and policies vary per provider, so double-check your own policy details or speak to our team if you have any questions about what's covered and what isn't.

How much does wine bar insurance cost?

Wine bar insurance could cost from £1.70 a day*.

It's difficult to give an actual figure without knowing more about your business. Costs depend on:

  • Your insurer: Different providers price risk differently, so quotes can vary.
  • Business activities: Whether you serve food, host events, or open late affect your risk profile and your premium.
  • Location: Where your bar is based is taken into account when calculating your price.
  • Claims history: Previous claims made against you, or by you, may affect future premiums.

Start a quote online today, and our UK-based team will be on hand to talk you through your options.

*This price is for a wine bar customer – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £620.50 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/2025 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £51.71 a month or £1.70 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.

How could you reduce wine bar insurance costs?

Here are some practical ways to help protect your premises and potentially lower your business insurance costs:

  • Demonstrate good risk management – Showing insurers that you actively identify, assess and reduce potential risks could impact your premiums. This includes maintaining high hygiene standards and keeping your equipment and building in good condition.
  • Strengthen health and safety practices – Improving health and safety procedures could reduce the chance of accidents or injuries on your premises, which could lead to fewer claims.
  • Invest in security – Adding security measures like CCTV, alarm systems, secure locks or better lighting could lower the risk of theft or vandalism. A more secure venue could be seen as lower risk, which could help bring insurance costs down.
  • Compare insurance quotes each year – Shopping around ensures you're not paying more than you need to. Bionic can help you compare wine bar insurance quotes from different insurers, so you can find the option for the level of cover you require.

Wine Bar Insurance FAQs

Do I need a licence to sell wine in my bar?

Yes. To sell alcohol in the UK, you need a premises licence, and at least one member of staff must hold a personal licence. This is separate from your business insurance and is arranged with your local authority. Learn more in our guide to business licenses.

Is wine bar insurance a legal requirement?

Employers' liability cover is a UK legal requirement if you anyone working for you, including full or part time staff or even volunteers. Other covers, like public liability and stock and contents, aren't required by law but should be considered to help protect your business from the risks it faces day to day.

Does wine bar insurance cover glass breakages?

This depends on your policy. Glass cover can sometimes be included as part of a buildings or contents policy, but it's worth checking with your broker, as cover for glassware and shopfronts often needs to be added separately.

Can I get insurance for my wine bar if I also serve food?

Yes. If you serve food alongside wine, always tell your broker so they can make sure your public liability cover reflects the added risks of working with food such as food contamination or kitchen equipment hazards.

What if I run tasting events at my wine bar?

If you hold any wine tasting events, you should always tell your insurer so they can arrange the right level of cover for you.

How quickly can I get insurance for a wine bar?

Depending on your policy and business needs, you can often get insurance for your wine bar the same day you apply. Start a quote online and one of our team will call you to finalise the details or you can schedule a call when you have the time.
