What is...

sports club insurance?

Insurance for your sports club can include a package with business cover such as public liability and employers' liability, business equipment and more on a single policy. This gives you a package of business cover for your UK sports club.

Running a sports club is a lively business with members, spectators, coaches and more on your premises on a regular basis. With a busy club comes risks, and accidents can still happen even with good safety practices in place. Your sports club insurance could include covers to help protect your business, so you aren't left paying out of your own pocket if something were to go wrong.

There are around 9,597 sports clubs in the UK, each employing around 18 people! More members and growing activities could lead to claims, which is why clubs of every size should consider the right insurance.

Why should UK sports clubs consider insurance?

Whether you run training sessions, matches, tournaments or clubhouse socials, there's always a chance something could go wrong. Common risks sports clubs face may include:

  • A member, visitor or spectator slips on a wet floor causing injury
  • Equipment, kit or clubhouse contents are damaged due to an insured event like fire or flood
  • A fire, flood or storm forces your club to close temporarily
  • A coach, groundskeeper or other worker is injured as a result of working for you

It's worth noting that if your club has any workers including full, part-time or seasonal coaches, or even volunteers - then employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement in the UK.

What isn't covered by sports club insurance?

When sorting insurance for your club, it's important to check for any policy exclusions. Look out for:

  • Intentional damage – Damage caused on purpose isn't covered
  • Neglect – Failing to maintain or secure your premises or equipment
  • Player-to-player injuries during play – Player to player, or member to member injuries are not usually covered, even by a governing body
  • General wear and tear – Normal ageing on your clubhouse or equipment isn't included

Insurers and policies vary per provider, double-check your own policy details or speak to our helpful, UK-based brokers if you have any questions about what's covered and what isn't.

Who should consider sports club insurance?

Whether you run a single clubhouse or several sites, you should consider protecting your building, equipment, employees and members. All sports clubs should consider insurance, we can provide quotes for the following and many others:

  • Football, rugby and cricket clubs
  • Tennis, squash and badminton clubs
  • Bowls and golf clubs
  • Multi-sport and leisure clubs
  • Youth and community sports clubs

If your club type isn't listed, it's likely we can still help. We can provide cover for 6,000+ business types — start a quote online to see your options.

Is sports club insurance a legal requirement?

Employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement for UK sports clubs that have workers including full or part-time, seasonal or temporary staff. You could face a fine of up to £2,500 for every day you trade without it.

Other types of cover that may be included as insurance for your sports club, such as public liability, contents and business interruption cover, are not required by law, but should be considered as part of your insurance to help protect against the risks your club might face. You may be left to pay out of your own pocket if you aren't protected with the right cover.

How much does sports club insurance cost?

Prices could start from around 85p a day*.

It's difficult to determine your costs without speaking to a broker, this is because your club is unique and price depends on several factors, including:

  • Size – A bigger club with more members and facilities may mean bigger claims, which means higher premium prices.
  • Location – As with home insurance, the location of your club can affect the price you pay for cover. Areas seen as a higher risk will come with higher premiums.
  • Type of sport – Contact sports or activities with a higher injury risk may cost more to cover than lower-risk activities.
  • Extent of cover – The more cover you require, the more expensive your package will likely be.
  • Claims history – If you've made a previous claim on your policy or had claims made against you, it may affect your future premiums.

*The price is for a commercial combined policy – the average of the bottom 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £311 annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/07/2025 & 30/06/2026. Equivalent to £25.93 a month or £0.85 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual price and policy may vary depending on your business requirements.

Sports Club Insurance FAQs

Do five-a-side or Sunday league teams need insurance?

If your team hires a venue for matches, the venue may hold its own public liability cover. But if you run your own sessions, manage equipment and a clubhouse, you should consider protecting against claims made against your team by taking out your own cover. This may include covers like public liability cover, business equipment insurance, as examples.

Does sports club insurance cover injuries during matches?

Player-to-player injuries during play are not covered by standard insurance or a governing body. You are playing at your own risk.

Your sports club insurance is there to help if a spectator, visitor or employee is injured (for example, slipping on a wet floor on your premises), or if club property is damaged.

Do I need cover if my club hires an external venue?

If you hire a hall, pitch or leisure centre, the venue's own insurance won't usually cover your club's activities, equipment or employees. You should still consider your own cover, and some venues may ask to see proof of public liability insurance before you can book to use them. If you are running events away from your usual premises, you must also inform your insurer to ensure you are properly protected.

Can community and charity-run sports clubs get cover?

Yes, most likely. Community amateur sports clubs (CASCs) and charity-run clubs can get sports club insurance in the same way as any other club. Start a quote online to speak to our team, so they can find options that fit your club. We also offer insurance for charities.

Does sports club insurance cover cancelled events?

Cover for cancelled events, such as a tournament called off due to bad weather, isn't usually included as standard. At Bionic, we do not provide event cancellation insurance.

What types of other cover should I consider?

Depending on your club's setup, you might also want to consider:
