What is...

social club insurance?

Social club insurance is a type of business insurance designed to help protect clubs, associations and member-based organisations from financial harm. Whether you run a local community group or a sports and social club, this cover can help protect against risks you might face.

A social club insurance policy may include several types of cover, depending on your needs. It can include protection against employee injury or illness as a result of work as well as protection against injury for visitors and building damage caused by an insured event.

If your club hosts events, serves food and drinks or manages facilities, having the right insurance in place can help if something unexpected happens and you’re at risk of a liability claim.

What types of social clubs are covered?

Social club insurance is flexible and can cover a wide range of organisations. Common examples could include:

  • Sports and social clubs
  • Community and volunteer groups
  • Hobby and interest clubs (for example - book clubs and photography groups)
  • Working men’s clubs and social venues
  • Societies or mutual companies

If your social club or group takes part in physical activities, sports events and outings, then social club insurance should be considered because the risks of accidents may be deemed higher than a knitting club using a clubhouse, for example.

Do I need insurance for a social club?

This depends on your individual circumstances. If you have any employees, volunteers or helpers employers liability is a UK legal requirement. It can help protect against injury or illness as a result of work they do for you. While other covers may not be a legal requirement, then could be considered essential if:

  • You have a lot of different visitors/members coming and going
  • You own the building premises
  • You host events or invite the public
  • Your club involves physical activities or sports
  • You own valuable equipment or assets

Cover is subject to policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and limits. You should always check your own policy carefully to see what is and isn’t included or speak to a trusted broker if you are unsure.

How much does social club insurance cost?

Prices could start from around 85p per day*.

Social club insurance costs can vary widely depending on several factors unique to your business, including:

  • The size and type of your club
  • The activities you run
  • The number of members, staff or volunteers
  • The value of your premises and equipment
  • Your claims history

To get accurate costs, it’s a good idea to get a social club insurance quote from a trusted broker, which will take into account your club’s specific needs and risks. Start a quote online today.

Social Club Insurance FAQs

Do I need employers’ liability insurance for volunteers?

Yes, employers’ liability insurance is legally required in the UK if you have employees and that includes volunteers. The definition of an employee is actually quite broad and extends beyond a ‘normal’ employee. The HSE states that you likely need EL cover for anyone who works under you, uses your equipment or who you pay National Insurance (NI) for.

Volunteers can still claim against you for injury or illness, especially if they help with events, bar work or even maintenance. Always check your own policy wording to confirm whether volunteers are included and speak to a broker if you are unsure.

Are events covered under public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance can include events held by your social club, including injury to attendees or damage to third-party property.

However, cover may depend on the type of event. Higher-risk activities (such as large public events, alcohol sales or live entertainment) may need to be declared to your insurer, and you may need additional cover.

If you do one off events – it’s a good idea to ensure all regular and one-off events are included in your policy. If you are unsure, speak to a broker.

Can we get insurance if we’re not a registered club?

Yes, you can still get social club insurance even if your organisation is not formally registered.

Insurers typically assess your activities, structure, and level of risk rather than your legal status. Whether you are an informal community group, a start-up club, or been going for a long time, a broker should be able to arrange cover for you.

Providing clear details to a broker about how your club operates will help ensure you get appropriate protection.
