What is...

printing insurance?

Whether you run a small print shop, multiple sites or work as a freelancer, having the right insurance in place may help protect your business from unexpected costs. For example, customer trips over a wire in your print shop, or an employee gets injured while using printing machinery at work.

Printing businesses often also use expensive equipment and specialist materials, so the right cover may help provide financial protection in the event of accidental damages like a fire or flood.

Printing insurance is usually arranged as part of a packaged business insurance policy. Rather than buying separate policies, businesses can opt for cover that combines different types of protection in a single policy. At Bionic, we are unable to offer standalone policies.

What types of printing businesses need cover?

Printing business insurance is available for a range of printing businesses, including:

  • Commercial printing companies
  • Digital print shops
  • Lithographic printers
  • Screen printers
  • Large format printing businesses
  • Sign makers and graphic printers
  • Embroidery and garment printing businesses
  • Label and packaging printers
  • 3D printing businesses
  • Freelance printers and print designers

Whether you operate from a workshop, studio, office or print shop, business insurance for printers may help protect your day-to-day operations.  Don’t see your business listed? We offer cover for over 6,000 business types. Get in touch today.

Why should printing businesses consider insurance?

Running a printing business can involve risks, such as:

  • An employee could injure themselves while using printing machinery
  • A customer could trip over loose cables in your print shop
  • Printing machinery could break down on the job, leaving you unable to finish jobs
  • A fire could break out in your storeroom, burning through all your valuable stock

Without the right insurance, your business could be left to pay for unexpected repairs, replacement or even legal costs following a claim. This could affect your finances, or worse stop you from trading.

If you rent your premises, your landlord may require you to have certain cover. You should always check your own rental agreement yourself.

What doesn’t printing business insurance cover?

Printing insurance policies often include exclusions and limits. The exact exclusions depend on your insurer and your own policy wording, but it may include:

  • Wear and tear - Insurance policies don’t include cover for general wear and tear to the building and/or equipment.
  • Deliberate damage - Claims involving intentional or deliberate damage caused by the policyholder are not usually covered.
  • Poor workmanship - Many standard business insurance policies exclude coverage for defects in workmanship. This means if there’s a flaw in the way something was made, many standard policies may not cover the costs to repair or replace it.
  • Poor maintenance of equipment - Damage caused by failing to properly maintain equipment or machinery may not be included within the policy terms.

Terms and limits apply. It is important to check your own policy documents carefully , so you understand what is and is not covered.

How much does printing insurance cost?

Prices could start from 85p a day*

The printing business insurance cost for your company will depend on several factors, including the size of your business, the insurer you choose and the level of cover you require.

Factors such as the number of employees you have, the type of products or services you offer, the location of your business, and whether or not you’ve had claims made against you or you have made previous claims can all affect your premium. Getting a printing insurance quote is the best way to see how much you’re insurance could cost.

*The price is for a commercial combined policy – the average of the bottom 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £311 annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/07/2025 & 30/06/2026. Equivalent to £25.93 a month or 85p a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual price and policy may vary depending on your business requirements.

Printing Insurance FAQs

Does printing insurance cover machinery breakdown?

It can, if you add it to your policy. Business equipment insurance for printing, isn’t included as standard. If you wish to add this cover to your policy, speak to a Bionic broker and they’ll arrange it for you.

Business equipment cover can help cover machinery breakdowns due to material damage. It can help with repair or replacement costs if insured equipment stops working unexpectedly, depending on the policy terms. Always refer to your own policy wording to see what is and isn’t included.

Can customer materials be insured?

If you are storing the finished product for a customer at your premises, you may want it to be insured. Arranging business content insurance on your policy policies may include cover for customer stock or materials while they are stored or being worked on by your business. If you are unsure if your policy includes this, speak to a broker to explain your cover details.

Does printing insurance include delivery risks?

Delivery or ‘goods in transit’ aren’t usually included as standard, but a small amount can be added to your policy to protect items being transported to or from your shop. However, if you are looking to move a large amount of goods or send them abroad, then it’s best to look into a separate cargo policy. We do not offer this at Bionic, but it’s likely we can insure your other business activities.

Not your usual boring business content!
