What is...
mosque insurance?
Mosque insurance is a type of business insurance designed for protecting the risks a place of worship faces day to day. Instead of buying separate, standalone policies, mosque committees can bring together covers like public liability, buildings and contents, and legal expenses insurance on a single policy.
Running a mosque means opening your doors to worshippers, staff, volunteers and the wider community, often across daily prayers, classes and events. Whether you run a local prayer room or a larger mosque with a community centre attached, the right cover can help protect your building, contents and the people who use it.
Insurance can't stop incidents, but it can help cover the cost of claims such as liability, repairs, replacing damaged property, and even legal support if you need it.
Who needs mosque insurance?
Whether you run a small local mosque or a larger site with a community centre, function rooms, you should consider protecting your building, contents, staff and visitors. We can help arrange cover for:
- Local mosques and prayer rooms
- Mosques with an attached community centre or hall
- Mosques with an imam, paid staff or volunteers
- Multi-site mosques and Islamic centres across more than one location
Mosques face risks that people don't always think about day to day, including:
- A worshipper trips or is injured on your premises
- A fire or flood damages your building or contents
- Vandalism, arson or a break-in
- A volunteer is hurt while helping to run an event
- A legal dispute with a contractor, employee or member of the public
If your mosque type isn't listed here, it's likely we can still help. We can cover more than 6,000 business types – start a quote online to see your options.
What does mosque insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what's included and excluded. Your mosque insurance could include:

Commercial building insurance

Employers’ liability insurance

Public liability insurance

Stock and contents

Product liability insurance

Legal expenses insurance
Cyber insurance
What isn't covered by mosque insurance?
When sorting insurance for your mosque, it's important to check for any policy exclusions so you can take out extra cover if needed. Look out for the following exclusions:
- Intentional damage – Damage caused on purpose isn't covered.
- Neglect – Failing to maintain or secure your premises could void your policy.
- General wear and tear – Normal ageing or wear on your building and equipment isn't included.
- Events away from your premises – If you run events off-site, you may need extra cover for locations away from your mosque.
Insurers and policies vary per provider, double-check your own policy details or speak to our team if you have questions about what's covered and what isn't.
Is mosque insurance a legal requirement?
In the UK, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement if your mosque has anyone working for it. This includes an imam, caretaker, admin staff, or volunteers who help run activities. You could face a fine of up to £2,500 for every day you trade without it if you have employees or volunteers.
Other types of cover, like public liability, buildings and contents insurance, aren't required by law, but you should consider them as part of your cover to help protect against the risks your mosque could face. Without them, you may be left to pay for repairs, compensation or legal costs out of your own pocket.
How much does mosque insurance cost?
Mosque insurance could cost from £1.21 a day*
But costs vary depending on several factors unique to your mosque, including:
- The size and type of your mosque
- The activities run by you or others at the premises
- The number of members, staff or volunteers you have
- The value of your premises and equipment
- Your claims history
*The price is for a victor-multi cover third sector secure policy – the average of the bottom 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £442 annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/07/2025 & 30/06/2026. Equivalent to £36.87 a month or £1.21 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual price and policy may vary depending on your business requirements.

Employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement if your mosque has any employees, including an imam, caretaker or even volunteers. You could face a fine of up to £2,500 for every day you trade without it. Other covers aren't required by law but should be considered to help protect your mosque against everyday risks.
Does mosque insurance cover vandalism or arson?
Buildings and contents cover could help with the cost of repairs if your mosque is damaged by vandalism, arson or a break-in due to forced entry, depending on your policy. But policies vary per insurer and limits and exclusions apply. Always check your policy wording for what's included and excluded, and speak to your broker if you're unsure.

If your mosque has volunteers who help run activities or events, you’ll need employers' liability insurance, in the same way as you would for paid staff.
