What is doctors’ practice insurance?
Doctors’ surgery insurance is a type of business insurance for GP surgeries, private practices, clinics and other medical business premises. It brings together several types of cover, like commercial buildings, employers' liability and business equipment insurance, to help protect your practice from the everyday risks of running a business.
Many GPs run their surgeries as small, independent businesses and having the right doctors practice insurance in place could help protect your practice, staff and premises if something goes wrong.
Why do doctors need business insurance?
As a doctor, you provide services to patients every day and practices can be busy with patients coming and going. If a patient slips and falls on your property – you could be liable. Similarly, if an employee is injured as a result of their work, they could also claim against you.
Business cover from Bionic protects the business side of your practice - your premises, staff, equipment, stock and legal costs. It doesn't include clinical negligence, medical malpractice, or anything related to patient treatment or diagnosis. You’ll need to arrange this separately.
Who needs doctors' surgery insurance?
Whether you run a single GP surgery or a private practice with multiple sites, you should consider protecting your premises, staff and patients. Doctors insurance could be considered by:
- GP surgeries and independent practices
- Private clinics and consultation rooms
- Cosmetic and aesthetics clinics
- Physiotherapy and out-patient clinics
- Multi-site medical practices
If your practice type isn't listed here, it's likely we can still help insure your staff, building and equipment. We can cover over 6,000 business types - start a quote online to see your options.
What can doctors’ practice insurance cover?
Policies will vary per provider, and terms and conditions apply, so always check the small print in your policy wording to see what's included and excluded. Your doctors surgery insurance package could include:

Employers’ liability insurance

Commercial building insurance

Public liability insurance
Stock and contents insurance
Business equipment insurance
Business interruption insurance

Legal expenses insurance
Cyber insurance
What isn't covered by doctors' practice insurance?
Business cover from Bionic is built for the business side of your practice, so it's just as important to know what isn't included. Your policy typically won't cover:
- General wear and tear or poor maintenance of equipment
- Deliberate damage or illegal activity
- Certain high-risk activities unless declared
Policies vary per provider, so always check your own policy wording carefully or speak to our team if you have any questions about what's covered and what isn't.
Does Bionic offer medical cover?
No, Bionic does not offer any type of cover for clinical negligence or medical malpractice. We offer cover for employees, building, stock and non-medical related liabilities. For example, a visitor slipping over on a wet floor in your surgery. We do not offer cover for any injury that occurs during medical examination, surgeries or treatment.
We do not offer cover for any injury during treatment.
How much is insurance for a doctors' surgery?
Prices could start from around 40p a day*.
The cost of your doctors' practice insurance will depend on several factors unique to your practice, including:
- Size - A larger practice with more patients and staff will usually mean a higher premium.
- Location - Practices in areas seen as higher risk may cost more to insure.
- Level of cover - The more cover you need, the more your policy is likely to cost.
- Number of staff - More employees can mean a higher employers' liability premium.
- Claims history - Previous claims made by or against your practice can affect your price

Doctors Practice FAQs
Do GP practices need employers' liability insurance?
Yes - if your GP practice has any employees, including part-time, temporary or volunteer staff, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement in the UK. Other types of cover, like public liability or business equipment insurance, aren't a legal requirement, but you should consider them to help protect your practice, staff and patients.
What insurance do I need for a private practice?
It depends on how your practice runs, but most private practices consider employers' liability, public liability, buildings, for example. If you use expensive equipment, business equipment insurance may also be worth considering.
Is professional indemnity insurance for doctors a legal requirement?
Professional indemnity insurance for doctors isn't always a legal requirement, although some work contracts or professional bodies may ask you to have it, usually as a condition of practicing medicine. We do not offer professional indemnity cover for doctors at Bionic.
