Octopus Energy reviews, prices and tariffs

Since starting out as a disruptor brand in 2016, Octopus Energy has grown into one of the UK's most popular energy suppliers, with a customer base of more than three million homes and businesses. Here's all you need to know about switching to Octopus Energy.

Who is Octopus Energy?

Octopus Energy is one of the UK's fastest-growing energy suppliers. It supplies energy to more than three million homes and businesses across the UK, and powers other well-known energy brands, including Affect Energy, Co-operative Energy, and M&S Energy and acquired Bulb in December 2022.

Sustainable energy is a huge part of the Octopus offering. Its main aim has always been to aim to use technology to promote affordable green energy alternatives, and it provides 100% renewable electricity that is generated from wind, water, and solar power.

Octopus Energy is part of the Octopus Group, which is a certified BCorp (a certification given to companies that excel in social and environmental change) that operates in 13 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, New Zealand, and USA.

What services does Octopus Energy offer?

Although primarily a supplier of domestic and commercial energy, Octopus Energy also provides affordable heat pumps, EV chargers, smart meters and more smart energy hardware. It is a licenced Meter Operator (MOP) that specialises in smart meter installations.

Octopus Energy also provides gas and electricity for a number of other energy brands, including Affect Energy, Co-operative Energy, Ebico, M&S Energy, Qwest Energy, and Roar Power.

What tariffs and rates does Octopus Energy offer?

Octopus Energy offers business owners fixed-rate energy tariffs to help with price certainty and bill stability. Although your energy bills will vary depending on how much energy you use, your unit rates are fixed to protect against future price rises.

All Octopus Energy tariffs provide 100% renewable electricity that's generated by wind, water, or solar power.

It also offers a range of special products, including:

  • Electric Universe Supply - Dynamic pricing and bill transparency designed for businesses that use half-hourly metering.
  • Panel Power - An export tariff designed for businesses that have solar panels. This means that qualifying businesses can sell back any surplus energy generated by their solar panels.

What is Octopus Energy’s cancellation policy?

As with all business energy contracts, there is no cooling-off period. This means that once you sign up for a commercial energy deal, you don’t have the option to cancel the contract. If you’re not still contracted to Octopus Energy, you can give 30 days’ notice before leaving. If your contract has entered its last 60 days, you can view your renewal options or give notice to leave.

Octopus Energy FAQs

If you have any questions about Octopus Energy that we’ve not covered here, you might be able to find the answer in the FAQ section of the Octopus Energy website

Some of the most common questions from Octopus Energy customers include:

Is Bulb part of Octopus Energy?

In late 2022, Bulb was sold to Octopus. The supplier was placed into 'special administration' and took on Bulb's 1.5 million customers. Find out more about what happens when an energy supplier stops trading in our Bionic guide.

When should I submit a meter reading each month?

Octopus Energy sends monthly reminders on the 25th of each month. You'll have between then and the 1st of the new month to submit your meter reading.

Can I get a smart meter and how long does that process take?

Octopus is installing second-generation (SMETS2) smart meters area-by-area for customers that want them.

I’ve received an objection, what do I do?

Firstly, you need to contact your current supplier and clarify the reason as to why they objected, as they do not inform Octopus of the reason. Then, once you have resolved the outstanding issues with them, get in touch with Octopus and they will reapply for your switch. When you switch business electricity or gas with Bionic, we'll take care of all of this for you.

How to switch to Octopus Energy

Octopus don't work with brokers or price comparison sites, so you'll need to go direct if you want a quote. But you might be able to get a more competitive deal if you compare different suppliers. Octopus might seem like the best option for your small business, but there’s no harm in letting Bionic check to see if you can get better rates elsewhere.
