A sole trader will pay different taxes than a limited company or a partnership, for example. These are some of the most common types of taxes that you’ll encounter.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Corporation tax\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>If you’re running a limited company, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbionic.co.uk\u002Fbusiness-finance\u002Fguides\u002Fcorporation-tax\u002F\">corporation tax\u003C\u002Fa> is applied to any profits — including those from trading and the sale of any investments or assets.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Corporation tax has a flat 25% charge, regardless of how much profit the company makes.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>You’ll need to register for corporation tax within the first three months of starting to trade as a limited company. You’ll then be responsible for ensuring the right amount of tax is paid, so you must keep accurate company accounts and file the Company Tax Return by your deadline.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4>How to pay corporation tax\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>As each business’s accounting year is different, knowing when to file and pay your corporation tax can be a little bit tricky.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Each year, you’ll have to submit a CT600 form to HMRC that’s due \u003Cstrong>12 months\u003C\u002Fstrong> from the end of your company’s accounting date. However, your corporation tax bill must be paid \u003Cstrong>nine months and one day\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003Cem>after \u003C\u002Fem>the end of your company’s accounting date. So, in practice, it works best to complete your company tax return early to find out how much corporation tax you’ll owe.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Income tax\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Income tax is only payable by individuals, so businesses won’t have to pay any income tax on themselves. If a wage is above the personal allowance of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gov.uk\u002Fincome-tax-rates\" data-new-window=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">£12,570 per year\u003C\u002Fa>, they'll be liable to pay income tax (allowance figure accurate as of the 2023\u002F2024 tax year).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\"If you’re a sole trader,\" explains Laura, \"you’ll pay income tax on the profit you make for your business. Remember that other earrings like savings interest or capital gains may also count toward your income and push you into a higher tax band.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>If you’re paid by a company, income tax will be taken through the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbionic.co.uk\u002Fbusiness-essentials\u002Fguides\u002Fhow-to-set-up-and-manage-payroll\u002F\">company’s PAYE scheme\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>VAT\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>No matter what kind of business you run — sole trader, limited company or anything in between — if your business makes VATable sales of more than £85,000 a year, you’ll have to register for \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbionic.co.uk\u002Fbusiness-finance\u002Fguides\u002Fbusiness-finance-for-tax-or-vat-bills\u002F\">VAT\u003C\u002Fa> (value-added tax).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>VAT is essentially a tax levied on the value added to a product when it moves through the product chain from a supplier to a buyer and then a customer.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gov.uk\u002Fvat-rates\" data-new-window=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The standard rate for VAT is 20%\u003C\u002Fa>, but some products or services will sometimes have lower rates.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4>How to pay VAT\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>VAT-registered businesses must pay VAT throughout the course of doing business, with a VAT tax return being filed to declare how much VAT they’ve charged or paid for. If you’ve paid more VAT than you’ve charged, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gov.uk\u002Fcharge-reclaim-record-vat\" data-new-window=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can reclaim the difference from HMRC\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>National Insurance\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>While it isn’t strictly tax, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbionic.co.uk\u002Fbusiness-finance\u002Fguides\u002Fnational-insurance-contributions\u002F\">National Insurance\u003C\u002Fa> (NI) is money that’s paid \u003Cem>to \u003C\u002Fem>the government.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>If your business employs staff, you’ll need to pay the employer’s portion of National Insurance contributions directly to HMRC. Office equipment and tools\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Most office equipment and tools are generally deductible. Transportation\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>If you use your vehicle for business purposes, you can typically deduct the business portion of your vehicle expenses, either by tracking all your vehicle expenses and calculating the business-use percentage or by using a standard mileage rate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>You can claim relief for expenses like petrol, insurance and repairs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>5.
